Haul Less& Reduce Costs
Filtration solutions using our superfiltration membranes cut food waste digestate volumes by up to 50-70%, directly reducing the volume and cost of hauling.
Unlock New Revenue Streams
Filtration solutions that leverage our superfiltration membranes can recover and concentrate nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) for use as organic fertilizer.
Improve Sustainability & Carbon Intensity
Biogas operations can boost sustainability and cut carbon scores by optimizing digestate use, reducing waste transport, and recycling water, safeguarding soil and water resources.
Improve Permitting & Compliance
ZwitterCo’s superfiltration membranes streamline digestate treatment with compact designs and offsite fabrication, easing expansion, reducing costs, and simplifying urban biogas project setup.
The Problem with Managing Liquid Digestate
Anaerobic digestion plays a leading role in the movement to divert organic waste from landfills to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The conversion of organic waste into biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) creates value from the inherent energy in food waste. Managing the liquid digestate, however, is a significant constraint in the permitting, cost-effectiveness, and overall sustainability of biogas development projects.
Because food waste digesters are frequently located near urban food waste hubs, these developments often have greater space constraints and less adjacent land for land-spreading digestate, as compared with on-farm digesters. As a result, achieving effluent quality that is safe for discharge or reuse while minimizing waste volumes for offsite disposal is a critical financial priority.

ZwitterCo Superfiltration
A Paradigm Shift in Membranes
Superfiltration membranes are a new separation class between ultrafiltration and nanofiltration. ZwitterCo superfiltration membranes deliver unprecedented fouling resistance, low energy requirements, wide pH tolerance, and the ability to be cleaned with chlorine.
Superfiltration membranes are designed for fractionating dissolved components, like capturing protein while passing inorganic molecules. Our membranes are engineered tightly enough to remove fats, oils, grease (FOG), and high-strength organics, providing ideal pre-treatment for reverse osmosis in wastewater.

The ZwitterCo Superfiltration Solution
Anaerobic digestion plays a leading role in the movement to divert organic waste from landfills to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The conversion of organic waste into biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) creates value from the inherent energy in food waste. Managing the liquid digestate, however, is a significant constraint in the permitting, cost-effectiveness, and overall sustainability of biogas development projects.
ZwitterCo’s superfiltration membranes remove tough-to-treat compounds from food waste digestate, allowing downstream polishing and nutrient recovery technologies to operate efficiently. Our membranes can also pre-concentrate waste streams at the source before anaerobic digestion, resulting in feedstocks with higher methane potential and lower moisture content.
Unlike biological treatment methods, our membranes require minimal footprint, have the fastest and easiest maintenance in the industry, and can concentrate complex organics that are challenging to break down biologically.
The Benefits of ZwitterCo
Haul Less, Reduce Costs
Off-site waste water hauling has been a part of the global digestate equation for decades, but it can be reduced, or even eliminated. Filtration solutions using our superfiltration membranes cut food waste digestate volumes by up to 50-70%, directly reducing the volume and cost of transportation.
When concentrated organic solids and nutrients can be stored in smaller volumes and repurposed as co-products throughout the year, advanced digestate treatment could eliminate the waste disposal hassle.
Improve Sustainability and Carbon Intensity
Biogas facilities can achieve lower carbon intensity scores by more sustainably managing digestate, whether through reducing offsite waste hauling, preventing the overloading of nutrients on soil from land application, or achieving wastewater qualities safe for discharge or reuse.
Water reuse, like landscape irrigation or other nearby demand centers, helps offset freshwater consumption to better preserve local water resources.
Unlock New Revenue Streams
Filtration solutions that leverage our Superfiltration membranes can recover and concentrate nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) for use as organic fertilizer. Simply store the concentrate over the winter, then use or sell it during the ideal growing seasons.
It’s a sustainable alternative to chemical-based fertilizers, known to be harmful to the environment, plus a new potential revenue stream from what is otherwise a waste stream.
Save Space and Improve Site Management
Filtration solutions using ZwitterCo’s membranes are some of the most space-saving and “footprint-flexible” digestate solutions.
Membrane systems can also be entirely fabricated offsite; gone are the days of outward expansion with high upfront capital costs and long onsite construction jobs. This leads to simpler permitting and facility design for new urban biogas projects.
