Validating ZwitterCo Expedition Superfiltration Solution for Reliable Industrial Wastewater Reuse
An industrial wastewater treatment and reuse plant in Jeddah industrial city treats combined wastewater discharges from multiple industrial facilities within the city. The treatment plant currently operates at a capacity of approximately 25,000 m³/d and is planned for expansion to 40,000 m³/d. The existing treatment process supports two primary objectives: production of secondary treated water for irrigation within the facility, and production of higher-quality treated water through reverse osmosis (RO) to meet industrial water requirements. As part of the planned plant rehabilitation and capacity expansion, advanced treatment solutions are being evaluated to support reliable operation under variable and high-strength industrial wastewater conditions, particularly with respect to conditioning wastewater for downstream reverse osmosis treatment.
The Challenge
The plant receives combined discharge from multiple industrial sources, variable in flow, suspended solids, and organic strength. These are conditions that
secondary treatment alone cannot reliably condition to RO feed specifications. At current capacity the impact is manageable, but at 40,000 m³/d with expanded RO production it is not. Feed variability drives membrane fouling, reduces recovery, and
increases cleaning frequency at the point where operational reliability matters most. The pilot tests one question: can an advanced pretreatment process consistently deliver stable, RO-ready effluent quality across the full range of influent variability this site produces, at a scale and complexity compatible with centralized industrial
reuse operations?
